All of the body work was done at Shelton Autobody in Manchaca, Texas. Before I picked it up, they sanded and primed the exterior and cut-in the firewall and openings.
The front axle is a Dana 44 from a '79 Wagoneer and the rear is a Model 20 HD from an '83 Grand Wagoneer. I had the gears and ARBs installed at Jeepmasters in Austin.
Tub on Frame for fitting. Rocker damage that needs repair. The rear passenger corner also needed to be replaced. I was luck enough to find a guy with a Scrambler parts tub and he let me have the rear inside corner(Thanks Jeepskate). I took the tub off the frame and to the body shop for repairs.
While the tub was gone I collected some parts and started installing the engine accessories.
I bought a Grand Wagoneer TF727 tranny in College Station for $300 and I cleaned and reused the Dana 300 transfer case. I borrowed an engine hoist from a neighbor and started putting everything back together.
When I finally got started working on the project I stripped everything from the top of the frame and wire wheeled all of the rust/grime/paint off down to bare metal. This is a nasty job and you will get dust and grime everywhere with the wire wheel. I coated the frame with 2 coats of Hammerite. While the tub was off I took it to be sandblasted. I got the tub sandblasted and primed with an epoxy primer for $250.
New Engine only $550. I got a deal!
Unfortunately when I got home I realized that the engine that was a runner when the Scrambler was parked was now a fused rust block. The seller and I worked this out and I found a deal on a new engine in Dallas.
We drove to Little Rock from Austin on 1/26 and then to Cabool and back to Little Rock on 1/27 and then back to Austin on 1/28. It was a lot of driving for one weekend, but I was excited about the upcoming project and we visited with friends in Little Rock so it was well worth the drive time.
This is what the Scrambler looked like when I picked it up in Cabool, MO on January 27, 2001.
